Ostia Antica is a large archaeological site, close to the modern town of Ostia, a harbour city located 25 kms southwest of Rome. Ostia Antica became Rome’s main seaport during the Roman Republic (509 BC – 27 BC) and the city was largely improved by Julius Caesar and Tiberus during the Roman Empire. Due to disease, the town was abandoned and buried for over ten centuries until it was rediscovered. The site is noted for the excellent preservation of its ancient buildings, magnificent frescoes and impressive mosaics.
