Detailed itinerary

1
Stop 1

Trajan's Market was built in 113 AD and has said to have been the world's oldest shopping mall. The shops and apartments were built in a multi-level structure and it is still possible to visit several of the levels. Highlights include delicate marble floors and the remains of a library.

2
Stop 2

Trajan's Column commemorates Roman Emperor Trajan's victory over Romania. It was completed in AD 113 and it is most famous for its spiral bas relief, which artistically represents the wars between the Romans and Dacians. The structure is about 30 metres high and is made of Cararra marble.

3

Trajan’s Forum was the last of the Imperial fora to be constructed in ancient Rome. It was a multipurpose space, centrally located, surrounded by public buildings and colonnades that served as a public gathering place.

4

The Forum of Nerva was the fourth and smallest of the imperial fora. Constructed in 85 AD by Emperor Domitian but officially completed and opened by his successor, Nerva, in 97 AD, hence its official name. This street had long served as a market area, especially for booksellers and cobblers; the new forum continued to serve as both a thoroughfare and as a monumental entrance to the larger Roman Fora.

5
Stop 5

In the Forum of Augustus you can see the Temple of Mars Ultor, built to commemorate Augustus’ victory in 42 BCE at the Battle of Philippi over the assassins of Julius Caesar. It was the place where important military decisions were made and a site for state ceremonies.
