Tradition has it that if visitors throw a coin into the fountain, they will be assured a return to Rome, two coins will lead to a new romance and three will ensure a marriage. Nearly 3,000 Euros are thrown into the fountain daily and are collected at night. The money is used as charity to subsidize a supermarket for Rome's less fortunate.

Stop 4

The name Spanish Steps earned its name after the Spanish Embassy that was permanently located there in 1647, and it was later transformed into the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See.

Below the staircase is an early 1600’s Baroque fountain, “Fontanna della Barcaccio”, or “The Fountain of the Old Boat”, a type of shallow boat particularly used for carrying wine to the port of Ripetta.

At the top of the elegant 18th century winding stairway is the French church of Trinità dei Monti.

This superb and spacious square takes its unique elliptical shape from the outline of the ancient Roman stadium of Emperor Domitian upon which the square was built. In the center of the square is Bernini’s famous Fountain of the Four Rivers surmounted by an ancient Egyptian obelisk. Populated by artists, musicians, and street performers, and surrounded by cafes and restaurants, Piazza Navona is one of Rome’s most entertaining squares to visit

Enjoy a stroll through the spacious square that welcomes you with its enormous embracing colonnades. St Peter’s Square is located in front of St Peter’s Basilica. The vast elliptical square was designed by the famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini for the purpose of allowing the greatest number of spectators to see the Pope give his blessings. Surrounding the square like embracing arms are the classic 4-column deep Tuscan colonnades surmounted by 140 statues of saints. In the center of Saint Peter's Square is the 84-foot tall Egyptian obelisk dating back to 2500 BC in Heliopolis. The obelisk was brought to Rome by Emperor Caligula in 37 AD.

St Paul Outside the Walls the second-largest basilica in Rome, one of the four highest-ranking churches in Christendom known as Papal Basilicas, and it is currently one of the top pilgrimage destinations for millions of Christians around the world. This remarkable basilica was given the name “Outside the Walls” as it was built outside the Aurelian Walls. It was originally built in the 4th century by Emperor Constantine over the burial site of Saint Paul the Apostle. Considered an architectural masterpiece that rivals all major papal basilicas in Rome, it vaunts a graceful portico and cloister of the monastery.
