Several Buddhist structures were raised at Sarnath between the 3rd century B.C and the 11th century A.D. Main structure of the site is Dhamek Stupa (Dhamekha Stupa) that was built by King Ashoka “The Great” in 3rd century B.C. Mulagandha Kuti Vihar represents the main shrine where Buddha used to sit in meditation for three month during the rainy season. Ashokan Pillar (Ashokan Lion) is a monolithic 15.25-meter-high pillar.
