At the junction of Bosnia and Herzegovina with Montenegro, at the foot of the high mountains of Maglić, Volujak and Zelengora, where the inaccessible canyon of the river Sutjeska widens, the settlement of Tjentište was tucked away. The large memorial complex was built on Tjentište in honor and memory of the great Battle of Sutjeska (5th Offensive, "Operation Schwarz"), one of the bloodiest battles fought by partisan forces in 1943 against combined German and Italian troops.
The subsequent development of the activity brought with it decisions for the expansion and construction of a larger complex, which includes: the Sutjeska Battle Memorial, an ossuary, a small brigade amphitheater, the Battle Museum, the Sutjeska Battle Memorial House (Spomen dom) and a number of memorials in the vicinity of Tjentišta.
The area of Sutjeska was declared a National Park on January 13, 1962.

Moreover, the highest peak of the mountain Maglić (2386 meters above the sea level) is also located within the national park and at the same time it is the highest peak in the whole country.
