The Caminito Del Rey is situated in the Gorge Desfiladero de Los Gaitanes and in certain areas, it is just 10m wide and 700m deep. The Caminito Del Rey, translates as ‘The King’s Little Pathway’) and was constructed as a walkway to provide access to several reservoirs used to provide water to a hydroelectric plant. It was opened by King Alfonso XIII and took his name.
The original walk way was a very dangerous walkway, perched on top of metal rods that were hammered in to the side of the gorge. During the last century, the walkway fell into disrepair and began to crumble. This made it an extremely dangerous walkway and after numerous deaths, it was closed. This still did not stop people attempting to walk or climb it.
