The world class Great Western Greenway is a traffic free cycling and walking trail, which follows the route of the renowned Westport to Achill railway which closed in 1937 and is the longest off-road walking and cycling trail in Ireland.

The Greenway traverses Ireland’s Atlantic coast between Westport town and Achill Island and visits the picturesque villages of Newport and Mulranny. It passes by some of the West of Ireland’s most dramatic mountains and offers magnificent views of Clew Bay and its many islands.

Cycle through the quaint and picturesque area and village of Mulranny, famed for its magnificent long beaches along Clew Bay with views across the bay to Ireland's Holy mountain Croagh Patrick. Stop at a cafe or hotel to take in the spectacular views!

All along this cycle route catch views of Ireland's holy pilgrim mountain of Croagh Patrick rising to the south of Clew Bay, It's iconiic conical shape bears testament to the many pilgrims who walked up this mountain in their bare feet to visit the tiny church at the top of the mountain.
