Dazu is a county of chongqing municipality. Dazu rock carving represent the entire 50,000 pieces rock sculptures and 100,000 inscriptions throughout Dazu county. all of them fall in 75 different sites. Baoding is the most famous one. construstion of Dazu rock carving spans between early Tang dynasty(7 century ) and fall of Qing dynasty (fall of 19th centruy). peak was at Song dynasty( 10th century to 13th centruy). Dazu rock carving is one of the four most famous buhddist rock carving in china.
Baoding rock carving has a history of more than 800 years. features of Baoding rock carving revolving with buhddism are :
1 it is a only tantric buhddist rock carving in Han chinese inhabited area.
2 it is a only buhddism preaching carving instead of a praying carving in china. local lay buhddist Mr zhao zhi feng spent his entire life--70 years to design, raise money and orgerniaze . it is a integrate buhddist scripture.
3 it shows the melt of the buhddism with confucianism.
