Magnificent Piotrkowska is the heart and soul of Łódź, and one of Europe’s longest commercial thoroughfares. On this self-guided walking tour, you’ll discover how a once-rural pathway evolved into an architectural showcase, and hear about the industrial triumph, social upheaval, and cultural revival it witnessed along the way.
The tour starts in Liberty Square. As you meander along Piotrkowska, I’ll share the stories behind its splendid buildings and tell you about the city’s unique trajectory, from tiny village to textile metropolis within a few decades. You’ll explore how four distinct cultures (Polish, German, Russian, and Jewish) shaped Łódź’s identity before 20th century conflicts and economic transformation dramatically changed its character.
Plac Wolności (Liberty Square) is an historic open space with trees, fountains and several museums.
On this tour we use the square as our starting point only (we cover it in more detail on another audiotour of Łódź).
Pasaż Róży (Rose Passage) is a striking work of public art which consists of a courtyard entirely covered in pieces of broken mirrored glass.
You spend time enjoying its effects while hearing its story and understanding its meaning.
This boulevard, one of Europe's longest city centre streets, is the focus of our tour. A flourish of architectural styles greet you as you hear of its stories and people which carve out the distinct history of Łódź.
A true landmark building, and a legend in its city's history, where international stars of stage and screen have gathered and whose marble interiors once more beckon proudly.
Discover how Łódź has become the centre of Poland's movie industry, creating world class cinema and Oscar-winning directors as you walk over dozens of stars honouring directors, composers, actors and technicians.
The tour ends at the famous Lodz Mural.
