About this experience

Taken in Edinburgh’s famous sites while hearing the history and folklore of witchcraft on this affordable self-guided walking tour.

Once you’ve booked, you’ll receive a ticket with instructions and a unique code listed under “Before You Go”. Then simply install the VoiceMap app and enter your code.

The app displays directions to the starting point, and when you’re in the right place, just pop in your headphones and tap start. VoiceMap has automatic GPS playback, with turn-by-turn directions. It also works offline.

This self-guided audio tour begins outside the Palace of Holyrood. You'll hear about how to use the app and what to expect on the tour.

Stop 2 Pass by

The tour follows a section of the Royal Mile from Holyrood House to the top of Castle Hill.

Stop 3 Pass by

The tour passes by the Scottish Parliament. You'll hear a bit about it while you walk.

Stop 4 Pass by

The tour goes into Bake House Close. You'll hear a bit about the close and about the history of witches before continuing the tour.

Stop 5 Pass by

The tour passes by John Knox House. You'll hear about John Knox who fiercely supported the Scottish Witchcraft Act.

Stop 6 Pass by

The tour passes through parts of High Street. While you walk, you'll hear more about the history of witchcraft in Scotland.

Stop 7 Pass by

The tour goes around the outside of St Giles' Cathedral. While you walk, you'll learn even more history about witches and witchcraft including some of the torture methods used to extract confessions from suspected witches.

Stop 8 Pass by

The tour passes over Victoria Terrace. You'll hear the story of Major Thomas Weir or the “Wizard of West Bow.”

Stop 9 Pass by

The tour ends at the top of Castlehill. While you walk up the street you'll hear the story of the last witch of Scotland.
