Discover Berlin at your own pace in the company of best selling author Rory MacLean. Start at the Reichstag, the building that best evokes the city's torturous (and euphoric) history, then follow the route of the Berlin Wall to stand both at the site of Hitler's wartime bunker and the unforgettable Memorials for the Murdered Jews of Europe. You can start the walk at your convenience. Audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smart phone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline. If you've got an hour and want to discover the heart of Berlin, and to understand key moments of German history – this is the tour for you!
The tour takes you on an easy walk from the Reichstag, Germany's parliament building, to the haunting site of Hitler's Führerbunker and the Holocaust Memorial, with an optional visit to star-architect Norman Foster's huge glass dome and its hugely impressive view over the city. Start the tour in the app, put your phone in your pocket, and let your guide direct you through the streets. The total walking distance is approximately 1 km and takes about an hour without stopping, but you can pause anytime. Most people will opt to finish with a drink, currywurst or sit down meal at Potsdamer Platz's Sony Centre. The narration is crisply mastered by a professional audio engineering staff, creating an engaging experience that is suitable for all ages that can wear ear buds.
As you walk a portion of it, you'll hear your guide's memories from first seeing the Berlin wall in the 1970's, and his experience being there on the day when East Germany collapsed in November 1989.
Allow yourself to become lost and disorientated among 2,711 concrete stellae.
Our tour will conclude at the bunker where Hitler met his end.
