After british captured Dar es Salaam from the Germans during World War -1, they built a depot for their carrier corps no longer needed, the Governor allowed the building to be used as a market, hence the name "Carrier Corps Market" and Swahili speaker pronounce the name as "Kariakoo". And that is how it is known until today.

It is artistically constructed in Gothic style with shingled spire, a vaulted interior and carved relief above the main altar. The interior still retains the original German inscriptions.

Askari Monument was built by the British colonial government replacing another statue mounted by the German colonial government in 1911 in commemoration of Major Herman Von Wissmann, the first Governor of German East Africa, appointed in 1895.The British demolished it in 1916 following Germany's defeat and retreat during the First World War.

Museum and House of Culture (MHC) is the first National Museum to be established in Tanzania, in 1937 and opened to the public on 7th December, 1940.
