About this experience

The beach of Preveli, also known as Lake Preveli or Phoenix, is located at the exit of the imposing Kourtaliotikos Gorge, where the Grand River (Megalos Potamos) flows. It is certainly the most famous beach in South Crete, accepting thousands of visitors every summer. During the ‘60s and ‘70s, it was a favorite destination for the hippies.

On the banks of the Grand River there is a large colony of Theophrastus palm trees, which give the region a sense of a tropical landscape.

You can walk along the river, under the shade of palm trees, and start ascending in the beautiful canyon.

The bus will stop at a parking lot, the closest to the beach, where there is a path descending down to the beach.

The parking is located near towering vertical cliffs, where you can take some fantastic photos. To reach the beach walk the footpath (app. 300 stairs) that takes about 15 minutes.

After, approximately 4 hours of free time at the beach, the day will come to an end and we will return back

Detailed itinerary

1
Stop 1

Preveli Beach, also known as Lake Preveli or Phoenix, is a stunning destination at the end of the Kourtaliotiko
Gorge, where the Grand River meets the sea.
In the 1960s-1970s, it was a popular spot for hippies.
Lush Theophrastus palm trees grow along the riverbanks, creating a tropical atmosphere. This is the second
largest palm forest in Crete, after Vai.
You can walk along the river under the shade of the palm trees or explore the beautiful canyon. At the river’s exit, the
beach has a mix of pebbles and sand, and on the eastern side, there is a rock shaped like a heart.
Here, you will have plenty of time to swim in the turquoise waters, relax in the sun, and enjoy the unique
scenery.
The bus will drop us off at the nearest parking area, surrounded by tall cliffs—perfect for taking amazing
photos. To reach the beach, we follow a footpath with about 300 steps, which takes around 15 minutes.
After about 4 hours of free time, we will return to the bus and head back to your hotel.
