The square was originally called Praça Barão do Rio Branco, but became known as Praça do Marco Zero due to the fact that it is home to the kilometer zero of Pernambuco's roads. It is formed by a red colored marker donated by the Automobile Club. On the side of the square is a bronze statue of the Baron of Rio Branco, 2.80 m high, by sculptor Felix Charpentier. In the center, one can see the compass rose by painter Cícero Dias.

Recife was famous for its high colonial houses, which appear in history books and photographs of the nineteenth century. They were located in other parts of the city and were almost all demolished.
