Detailed itinerary

1
Stop 1

The Somme 1916 Museum in Albert offers a poignant journey into the daily lives of soldiers during the Battle of the Somme. Housed in a 250-meter-long underground tunnel, originally an air-raid shelter, the museum recreates trench life through a series of immersive dioramas with sound, light, and authentic artifacts. Visitors descend 10 meters below ground to experience the harsh realities faced by those who fought in 1916.

2
Stop 2

The Lochnagar Mine Crater is a vast and poignant reminder of the opening day of the Battle of the Somme. Located near La Boisselle, France, it was formed on July 1, 1916, when the British Army detonated a 60,000-pound mine beneath German lines.
This immense explosion created a crater approximately 100 meters (330 feet) wide and 21 meters (69 feet) deep, one of the largest man-made craters of World War I. Today, it stands as a preserved memorial site, maintained and cared for by the dedicated Friends of Lochnagar association.

3

Caterpillar Valley Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery located near Longueval, France, in the heart of the Somme battlefield.

This site is a poignant resting place for over 5,500 soldiers, most of whom remain unidentified. It includes the Caterpillar Valley (New Zealand) Memorial, which commemorates the 1,200 New Zealand soldiers who died in the Somme sector between August 1916 and February 1918 and have no known grave.

4
Stop 4

Our itinerary includes a lunch stop at the Tommy Museum Café in Pozières, where we will delve into the Battle of Pozières, a pivotal and intensely fought battle within the Somme offensive.

5

The Windmill site at Pozières is a crucial vantage point for understanding the Battle of the Somme. As the highest point on the entire Somme battlefield, it offers unparalleled panoramic views of the surrounding terrain and where the tanks were used for the first time in history.

6
Stop 6

The Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme is the largest Commonwealth memorial in the world, located near the village of Thiepval in France. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, this imposing 45-meter-high monument commemorates over 72,000 British and South African soldiers who fell on the Somme battlefields between July 1915 and March 1918 and have no known grave.

7
Stop 7

The Newfoundland Park in Beaumont-Hamel is unique worldwide, offering visitors the chance to explore a complete and preserved trench system in its original post-Great War state. It provides an unparalleled opportunity to understand trench warfare.
