Wadi Al-Hitan, Whale Valley, is a World Heritage Site. This amazing place has a small museum that explains the significance of the site. There is a small cafe’ and clean restrooms there too. Well marked trails wind through the desert to numerous fossils exposed in the sandy terrain, many complete skeletons, of whales. These extinct whales are in the final stages of loosing their hind limbs as they transition from land based to ocean going mammals. Here is the largest concentration of intact whale fossils in the world! Just as incredible as the fossil-rich land is the bizarre and beautiful terrain with its alien rock formations scattered over the endless desert sand.
