The site is still home to the Temple of Zeus and Hera where the Olympic Flame is lit, workshop of Phidias.
Not to be missed is the modern on-site museum which houses many masterpieces and a large amount of artifacts uncovered from the site, from pre-history to early Christian periods. Its permanent collection includes an almost complete pediment of sculpture from the Temple Of Zeus, a bronze collection & many significant pieces such as the very drinking cup of Phidias, excavated from his workshop & possessing his name in inscription.
At the entrance to the Archaeological site sits this Museum dedicated to the Olympic Games through its historical foundation to the modern day Olympics. With many old & new artifacts you can take an extra journey to learrn about this most important aspect of Ancient Olympia the development of this gift to the world.
