The Ancient Agora formed the center of commercial life in Ancient Athens. As the main marketplace it was where people gathered, as well as the site where western democracy and many areas of Philosophy were developed. Indeed the most famous philosophers of Greek antiquity such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle choose this place to teach their students. The Agora was the heart of ancient Athens' democracy, where citizens participated directly in government and principles like meritocracy and equality before the law were established during the 5th century BCE.
