Afterwards we drive along a spectacular dune belt in the direction of the Namib Desert. En route we visit some of the highest dunes in the area. Our next destination is an oasis in the Swakop Canyon called Oasis Goanikontes, meaning "place of many trees". Surprisingly we come across a lush landscape with many trees due to the groundwater in the dry riverbed. The farm has now been turned into a pleasant resort with a restaurant in the middle of the "Moonscape".
We then return to the coast and visit the historical tow of Swakopmund. Swakopmund, known as the prime holiday resort of Namibia, was founded in 1892 by the German Colonial Reich. For many years this town was the main harbour for the territory, being served by the mole and later the jetty. Both these structures still exist. Many historical buildings dating from that area are still being used and are rated as historical monuments. The distinct German Colonial character of Swakopmund has been well preserved and is undoubtedly a key attraction for tourists and entrepreneurs.
